Harris County homeowners are pushing for their property values to remain steady amid the economic shutdown from the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to ABC13, most homeowners were issued letters in March or April letting them know that their home values increased, which means they would have to pay higher property taxes by year's end. But they are speaking out about it as the coronavirus keeps businesses closed, causing many to be left without jobs.
Cathie Hyde, a homeowner who received a letter that her home value would see a 10% increase, said the county needs to consider the current state of the economy.
"To be hit with these increased appraisals at the end of March when we already knew the situation was happening, it just doesn't seem fair," she told ABC 13. "It seems wrong to not take into account the current trends, which are going to make the taxpayer pay more taxes this year, when they actually need the most money in their pockets right now."
