CITY OF ABILENE: Abilene Area Recycler No Longer Accepting Cardboard & Paper

Recycle

City of Abilene issued the following announcement.

Due to a prolonged depressed recycling market, Abilene’s contractor for the processing and marketing of recyclable materials, Texas Metals and Recycling Company, will no longer accept cardboard or paper materials. This change results in the City of Abilene no longer accepting these materials at the City recycling collection centers.

Sunday, January 31, 2021, will be the last day to drop off cardboard or paper recyclables at City and Neighborhood Recycling Centers.

The City of Abilene and Texas Metals and Recycling have been in continuous discussion concerning recycling for years, and the City entered into a contract to subsidize the cardboard and paper recycling program over a year ago. Even with the City’s financial participation in this program, Texas Metals and Recycling has determined that the program will end. The contractor’s decision was based upon the financial and market conditions of the recycling industry and continuous downward trends of material pricings across the United States.

The City of Abilene will continue to evaluate recycling opportunities within the Abilene area in an attempt to bring back cardboard and paper recycling for our customers.
