Lone Star College issued the following announcement.
Lone Star College-Houston North awarded degrees and certifications this fall to its inaugural graduating class. LSC-Houston North, which opened in fall 2019, is the seventh college in the LSC system.
“This is the proudest I have ever been in my 18 years in higher education,” said Quentin Wright, Ed.D., LSC-Houston North president. “When we created LSC-Houston North, we did so with the goal of completion in mind. It is great to see the college have graduates after only 18 months.”
Students earned Associate of Arts degrees in Criminal Justice and Liberal Arts. Certifications were also awarded for Human Services and HVAC. These are the first set of graduates in which at least 50% of their credits were earned from an LSC location associated with the new LSC-Houston North college.
“LSC-Houston North was designed based upon national best practices in student retention and success,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “Classes are 8 weeks long and offered in morning, afternoon, or evening blocks for the purpose of supporting the working student.”
In addition to the flexible class schedule, all first-time-in-college students are provided a faculty/staff mentor who contacts the students weekly. Students also have access to a range of wraparound services including on-site food pantries, curbside meals, technology resources consisting of internet and loaner laptops, social services, and emergency assistance.
"During the pandemic, Lone Star College-Houston North provided over $45,000 to students in the form of food assistance, emergency funds, internet service and laptop devices,” said Wright.
LSC-Houston North serves residents living inside Beltway 8 and encompasses four locations including LSC-Houston North Fairbanks, LSC-Houston North Greenspoint, LSC-Houston North Victory and LSC-Houston North Fallbrook. LSC-Houston North Fallbrook will open spring 2021.
