University of St. Thomas issued the following announcement.
Alumna Marylyn Harris, RN, MSN, MBA ‘07, a cybersecurity consultant, Gulf War Army nurse veteran, speaker, writer and social entrepreneur, has been named to Houston Business Journal’s 2020 Women Who Mean Business.
After reviewing hundreds of nominations, the Houston Business Journal (HBJ) announced 96 women as honorees on the prestigious list. The awards distinguish recipients across 11 categories. The criteria for selection included career achievement, contribution to company and city success, community involvement and leadership.
Harris, who was an adjunct clinical instructor in psychiatric mental health nursing in the UST Peavy School of Nursing from 2013 to 2016, said, “I am honored to be included among this list of ‘distinguished Houston powerhouses.’”
UST Changed Harris’ Life
Harris noted, “Attending UST changed the trajectory of my life. I was the only registered nurse in my classes at business school. Those classes taught me to be courageous and to solve problems and to teach other women veterans how to be leaders.”
Harris Opens Women Veterans Business Center
In 2010, Harris and her children started the country’s first Women Veterans Business Center in Houston. Since then, she has traveled the country training and empowering women veterans and military families to found and grow “wealth-generating” businesses. The Center has connected to more than 25,000 stakeholders and helped to grow women, veteran-owned businesses to more than 400,000 nationally.
President Barack Obama named Harris a “Champion of Change” in 2013, and the Houston Chronicle recognized her as a “Houston Hero” in 2015. She was the keynote speaker at Houston’s 2019 Memorial Day Event.
