Mayes Middleton, a Republican elected to the Texas State Senate in 2023 to represent the 11th Senate district, publicly criticized Democratic lawmakers on his social media account over their recent absence from legislative duties. In a series of tweets posted on August 3 and 4, Middleton addressed what he described as a dereliction of duty by House Democrats.
On August 3, Middleton stated, “Real Texans show up for work, and when they don’t, they get fired. Fine them and arrest them. Democrats quitting on their job with no return date is vacating their office, let’s fire them. As your next Attorney General I’ll fight to hold any runaway Democrats accountable.”
Later that day, he followed up with another message: “ALL OPTIONS ON THE TABLE” (August 3).
In an additional post early on August 4, Middleton reiterated his stance: “House Democrats will face being vacated from their office and potential bribery charges. Let’s hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Thank you @GregAbbott_TX!”
Middleton replaced Larry Taylor in the state senate following his election in 2023. His recent comments come amid ongoing political disputes in Texas regarding party-line absences from legislative sessions.
